Alumnus in the Spotlight: George C. Freeman Jr.

Current Occupation/Title: Firefighter

My Academy at Coral Reef: The Legal & public Affairs Academy

Favorite Memory/ Activity: Partaking in America’s favorite pastime in which we know as Football, Conversing alongside friends and attending as many extra-curricular activities as possible, not limited to school dances and basketball games.

Life after Graduation:
I attended Alabama A&M University where I majored in Sociology with a minor in Criminal Justice. While at AAMU I pledged the greatest and most prestigious fraternity known to man: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, Delta Gamma Chapter. I graduated from my beloved alma mater in the spring of 2008, with the heartfelt title of Cum Laude with a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice.

Soon after graduating from college, I came home to Miami and worked at PRC for a few months and decided that I would follow my passion. With that being said, I prayed and asked God to lead my steps…a few long and hard fought months later, I earned the title of being a certified firefighter. Unfortunately finding a job with a fire department was no easy task, so I worked at Enterprise Rent- A-Car in the management trainee program for the next two years.

Over those two years I applied to numerous fire departments without success. By God’s timing and not mine at all, I finally received an opportunity to work with a fire department in May of 2011. The department that I was oh so blessed to work at is The East Point Fire Department which is actually located in East Point, Georgia; a small suburb of Atlanta Georgia where I currently reside.

Measure Your Success

How do we determine success? You may be surprised to know this but success is not about how much money you make (my opinion). It's how much happiness and love you have. It doesn't matter that you didn't become a star, invent the next big thing, or play the best in a national sport. What matters is you can eat every day, you're happy, you have love and you have what you need.

Any time we see a class reunion portrayed in the movies there's always a character or two lamenting of the "unsuccessful" person they are compared to classmates. Forget about other people! What about the adversity you overcame? The challenges life threw your way that made you proud to say "I did that." or " I made it through that." YOU FINISHED HIGH SCHOOL and that is a big deal.

Determine your own measures of success and be proud!  Where are you now and what have you been up to? Send us your bio and be the next addition to our Alumni in the Spotlight.

Post your comments here on the topic of success and let us know your thoughts!

Reunion: A Reminder of Your Foundation

What is it about a 10 year reunion that makes people reminiscent or (in some cases) try to block memories? Is it the lure of remembering the youth and innocence of a childhood long gone? Is it the warm and fuzzies felt when you remember your first explorations of emotions like love and heartache-- or what you thought they were at the time?  There are many questions to be considered when it comes to why we reunite. In the end, all these questions point back to the same place and that's a reflection of the past.

Reunions are for catching up, finding out whatever happened to <Insert Classmate or Teacher Name> and reconnecting with those from a past that laid down the roots of who we are today. It may not be obvious but that crush, bully, boyfriend, girlfriend, first time, etc. They were all part of shaping the individual we are today. The teachers, faculty, and staff (about 38 of which are still at Coral Reef. Drop them a note to say hello, will ya?) they all played a roll in influencing life choices from "what should I eat" to "who should I date?" When there was no one else to understand you better, we had each other, we had CRHS--our extended family.

Our reunion is an opportunity to say "Thank You!" to each other for showing us to be strong, showing us we are important, and nurturing the foundation for who we would one day become. There may not have always been a positive experience to remember for everyone but every experience was one of learning, one of growth and opportunity. The love and hate we experienced were equally as important to building character.

Who are you because of Coral Reef High School? Let us know in the comments and while you're at it, send in your bio! Several other classmates already have: Alumni in the Spotlight.

Then vs. Now: Year 2000 Freshman Year

It's always great fun to think back on your high school days and think "If I knew then..." In the year 2000, a select few Class of 2003 Freshman were asked a series of questions.

Here's that list and how students responded. Comment at the end and let us know your answer to any question!

If you're featured in this post we'd love to know how your response has changed. Post a comment!

How has your particular magnet made your high school experience unique?

What movie would you like to live in and why?

What exotic places have you been too?

If you had powers beyond that of a human being, what powers would you have?

Where do you like to hang out? What do you do there?

What was your most embarrassing moment?

What would you do, if you were to win the lottery tomorrow?

If you were to go anywhere [in] the world, where would you go and why?

What are your resolutions for the new millennium?

What that you do now will help your wishes for the future come true?

Are you musically inclined?
